Origin: Colombia is a window into the deep process of coffee farms in Tolima, Colombia. Matt Young has been a barista for more than 7 years, and a photographer for even longer than that. Being a part of that industry for so long led to a chance to document the land where some of the best coffee in the world is grown.
Many people don’t even know what a coffee cherry looks like. Even more people don’t know the process it takes just to get you that $5 cup of coffee from your local café. Matt’s zine is a way of passing that unknown through a series of images that help the viewer take in the beauty of Tolima, and the work it takes in the coffee industry.
Accompanied with the images are personal essays, written by the coffee producer from Colombia, Herbert Peñaloza Correa, who writes about the struggles within the industry and the truths behind it. And Zack Burnett, the coffee roaster/owner of Bold Bean Coffee Roasters, who starts the zine with his personal experience visiting coffee farms and the significance of it as a coffee roaster.
This zine is the start of a series documenting coffee farms around the world. It’s not only an expression of Matt, but an expression of coffee itself.
