TITLE : LIMEHOUSE REACH
SERIES
AUTHOR : RICHARD BRAM
I’ve known Richard Bram’s work for many years, particularly his street photography.
But his practice extends far beyond that, and this series is a clear example.
It is an observation of what exists and unfolds around the place you live, seen from within it.
Both aspects are essential to fully understand the work.
“I’m a photographer. Today I’m mostly known for my street photography, but my practice has never been limited to that. The series “Limehouse Reach” is evidence of just that.
In 2016 we returned to London after an eight year stay in New York. Our home looks over Limehouse Reach, a historic part of the River Thames, where the river makes a great loop to the south. The view is wide and ever-changing as the tide goes up and down 7 meters every day under a vast sky. Both Turner and Whistler sketched and painted within 100 meters of where I sit. I see the same things that they did. I use the camera as my paintbox to record the air, light, and water of the Thames from our terrace. While I’ve always said I would much rather sit and contemplate a landscape than try to put a rectangle around it, I’m a photographer. I can’t help myself.”
