TITLE : ONE POOL, LOS ANGELES
SERIES
AUTHOR : ROBIN BELL
Robin Bell spent two years taking photos of this pool in Los Angeles to understand what the city represented for her.
“This project is on one pool in Los Angeles. I photographed it for two years.
The series examines how reflections on water change as the light changes across days and seasons.
It is about illusion. Like many people at that time, I felt dislocated. I was also a temporary transplant to Los Angeles where I felt like I was an alien in a mirage. This series is of Los Angeles. L.A. specific details locate me in this series–colors, light, palms, seediness and lushness.
Yet images can be of an uncertain subterranean world that is multidimensional. They are beautiful and transient. I am confused, I don’t know where I am.
This project embraces the illusion, the lovely but shape-shifting unreal.
To me, those photographs are symbolic of my experience of Los Angeles.”
