When I see the photos of Umberto Verdoliva my senses return to the past, to when I was a child.
It is not the black and white, it is not the grain, it is not his subjective way of composing the images nor the choice of what he photographs.
Or maybe yes, it is the sum of all these elements.
But the certain thing is that I enjoy getting lost in memories.
The sequence of photos takes on the aspect of cinematographic film from that Italian cinema of the 60s/70s.
Poetry and cinema merge in this series dedicated to the island of Procida and as the poet Giuseppe Ungaretti says:
“Why the island? Because it is the point where I isolate myself, where I am alone: it is a point that is separate from the rest of the world, not because it really is, but because in my state of mind I can separate myself from it.”
About Umberto Verdoliva
Umberto Verdoliva was born in 1961 in Castellammare di Stabia in the province of Naples.
He lives in Treviso.
He immediately loved street photography, this awareness over time pushed him to investigate humanity, not just that encountered by chance in the streets, as if it were part of the things dearest to him.
An immense family album where “strangers” and “known” intertwine with each other through a common thread.
That “daily personal” which represents the place of all the search for him.
In 2013 he founded “SPONTANEA” an Italian collective dedicated to street photography dissolved in 2019 which has left a significant mark on the Italian street community.
Photography is a parallel tool to his professional life.
He tries to tell through images everything he experiences day after day, from the streets outside his home to his work environment, from his family to the places he frequents, investigating his experiences with a careful eye and profound sensitivity to leave traces and memory of others too.
In recent years he has created numerous photographic projects, although distinct, all together they represent a unique project, his story as a man, and his thoughts on life.
Many photographic projects have been published in the main photography magazines and awarded in important Italian and international photography awards.
